THE CRUSADES (2004)

After an assassination attempt on the King, one agent must infiltrate the conspiracy before the government is overthrown. In her investigation she discovers her former lover may be involved in the plot.
I've always wanted to do a film noir black-and-white spy thriller thing, and so I thought of every kind of scene I wanted to see and wrote it all into one script. Where does the title come from? That's a long story, but the reason it stuck with me is because I like titles that are bigger than the plot of the film. Naturally the audience wonders how the title is related to the story and its usually obvious. But I like to make them think and ponder the larger themes of the film in search of that meaning.
In addition to the spy thrillers of the Cold War such as The Manchurian Candidate and Seven Days in May the darker, more cerebral stuff in The Crusades was much inspired by one of my favorite shows The Twilight Zone. While Crusades remains primarily an action movie, there are moments where you almost expect to hear the voice of Rod Serling explain what is going on. The Twilight Zone is what media historians have called "video noir" a genre similar to film noir but adapted to the conventions of a commercial television series.
Originally, I wanted the project to be a miniseries, but time did not allow this. Perhaps I may resurrect the story for the future, if ever I decide to venture into TV. For now, I'm very happy with the movie. I had more fun working on this project than any other, thanks primarily to the hard work and devotion of the entire cast.
