A STATEMENT ABOUT MY ETC
by Johnathan Carr
I love painting and collage, but usually only make anything when I'm inspired. Since most inspiration for this art comes from other people, some of my best artwork you won't find here. I've made a few pieces over the years as gifts, but kept no copy of them for myself. It's cool, they're more special that way.
This is just a sample of other stuff I like to do (I also designed this website, by the way). Images may take a few moments to load...

52
12.25" x 10.25"
A deck of playing cards and glue
Hehehehehe. I call this 52 but there probably isn't a whole deck here. If you like that, trying playing this game I invented.

Two Hearts
5" x 7"
Ink on computer paper
Tried my hand at pointilism. It's pretty cool, actually. My art teacher would always criticize me for using hearts in my work, saying that they're too iconic or something. "That's the point," I thought.

Breakfast Over-the-Counter
8" x 6" x 1.5"
Wood, clay, acrylic paint
Back when I was a caffeine-fiend on those sleepless nights in my senior year of high school, NoDoz and Exceddrin were like vitamins. So I made this little piece. I also threw in the antacid Tagamet for good measure.

Hidden
9" x 12"
Tempura, acrylic, oil paint, ink, oil pastel, chalk pastel, masking tape, finishing nails
Sometimes I like to use as much media as possible when making a piece, because painting to me is very much like chemistry: an ongoing experiment with pigments and texture. I used so much paint on this, the paper was starting to tear, so I had to reinforce it with tape and ended up just using tape in the piece (and can you spot the nails?)

Caffeine
8.5" x 11"
Oil pastel, chalk pastel
This one is pretty self-explanatory.

Mountain Dew Espresso
4" saucer, 2.5" x 2" cup
Ceramic paint on ceramic
Ok this is something I actually did make for someone else, but happen to have kept an image for posterity. My brother is totally into Mountain Dew and I made this for him at Made By Me in Cambridge, MA. It was his birthday and I told him he could use it for that Dew energy drink, you know, like 4x the caffeine (like an espresso!)

Anthem
8.5" x 11"
Ink on graph paper
Inspired by Ayn Rand's Anthem, this is an example of how my brain kinda works. I was listening to the book on tape and drawing this along with it. If you know the story, you can sort of follow along and see little plot points here and there. It's a fun exercise.
